The table presents data about the proportion of household types living in poverty in Australia in 1999.
Overall, sole parents and single adults without children were the most vulnerable groups, while elderly couples and single elderly people were the least affected. In total, around 1 in 10 people experienced poverty.
In general, all household types stood at 11% which is slightly under 2 million people. Among them, all elderly people had the least poverty rates and stood at 5% approximately. At the same time, the proportion of people in poverty was the highest among single adults, it did not matter whether they had children or not. These groups had figures at 20% approximately.
In the meantime, couples with and without children stood at 12% and 7%, respectively. The figures for single couples were quite lower than that of couples with children and accounted for above 200 000. This data demonstrated that couples were among the average of people living in poverty
