Overall, the number of students grew considerably over the years. In the mid-2000s, tennis and football were preferred by almost three-quarters of students. Ten years later, football became the dominant choice along with basketball, accounting for a 75% share.
In the 2004-2005 school year, 73,000 students studied at a Malaysian secondary school. 40% among them said tennis was their favorite sport type, while 30% preferred football. At the same time, basketball was emphasized as the first choice by 15%. It is apparent that swimming and rugby were the least popular sports, accounting for 10% and 5% respectively.
