The table compares the populations of four major cities in 2000 and 2020, as well as the percentage growth over this 20-year period.
Overall, all four cities experienced an increase in population. Tokyo remained the most populous throughout, whereas Sydney had the smallest population but recorded the fastest rate of growth. By contrast, London grew only marginally over the period.
In 2000, Tokyo had by far the largest population, at 12 million, followed by New York with 8 million and London with 7.5 million. Sydney had the smallest population at just 4.5 million. By 2020, both Tokyo and New York had grown steadily, reaching 13.2 million and 9.5 million respectively. This represented a rise of around 10% in Tokyo and almost 19% in New York, with the latter city gaining 1.5 million residents overall.
London’s population, on the other hand, showed only a slight increase, from 7.5 to 7.8 million, a gain of just 4%. In contrast, Sydney underwent the most significant expansion, climbing from 4.5 to 5.5 million, which equates to just over 22% growth, the highest proportion among the four cities.
