Overall, the international visitor arrivals to New Zealand and the total New Zealand’s traveler departures to five different countries both experienced an upward trend. Noticeably, the visitors who traveled to New Zealand most common were Australia’s residents in both 2005 and 2015. Additionally, Australia was also the most popular place that New Zealand’s residents often traveled.
In 2005, Australia’s visitors were the main source of New Zealand’s tourism, with 885,604 visitors, which kept growing to 1,372,112 people in 2015. However, the reverse is true for the number of China’s travelers, with only 98,832, which was the fewest in 2005. Interestingly, the number of China’s visitors increased dramatically to 403,152, surpassing the remaining countries became the second highest country in 2015.
Regarding New Zealand resident short-term departures, Australia was the most popular place that New Zealand’s residents prefer to have a trip in both 2005 and 2015, with 923, 066 and 1,139,900 respectively. In 2005, almost all the countries had only below 100,000 New Zealand’s visitors visited except Australia. However, the number of New Zealand’s tourists traveled to the UK and the USA had over 100,000, reaching 112,080 and 176,480 respectively after a decade.
