The two tables illustrate how much wheat was consumed per person and produced overall across five regions in 2010, measured in kilograms and million tonnes respectively.
Overall, Europe had the highest per capita consumption of wheat, whereas Africa recorded the lowest figures in both consumption and production. Meanwhile, Asia led the world in total wheat output.
When it comes to consumption, Europeans ate the most wheat by a wide margin, averaging 85.2 kg per person. North America came next at 67.4 kg, which was more than double the amounts consumed in Asia (29.3 kg) and South and Central America (27.5 kg). People in Africa consumed the least, averaging just under 20 kg per person.
In terms of production, Asia generated the largest supply of wheat at 188.5 million tonnes. Europe was the second largest supplier with 150.6 million tonnes, while North America produced roughly a third of Asia’s total at 60.7 million tonnes. Output was much lower in the remaining regions, with South and Central America producing 20.5 million tonnes and Africa trailing behind at 18.3 million tonnes.
