Overall, both Canada and the United States have seen international student numbers increase, although at different growth rates. Canada has significantly higher growth rates, especially in Chinese and Indian students. However, trends in the United States are more mixed, with variations across different nationalities.
In the 2002-2003 school year, the total number of international students studying in Canada was 59,870. Of the 2,100 students from India, about 5,000 students are from both China and the United States. In the following school year, there were 45% Chinese students, 9% American students and 35% Indian students.
The total number of international students coming to Canada increased by 17%.
In contrast, the United States had a more modest 2% overall growth rate in the number of international students, totaling 592,230 in 2003. While the number of Chinese students increased 6% to 116,600, so did the number of students. India decreased significantly, decreased 9% to 182,000. In addition, the number of Canadian students registering to study in the US decreased by 7% to 33,170 during the same period.
