Overall, expenditures on higher education, transportation, and environmental services followed an upward trend, while a reverse was true for K-12 education, health and human resources, and other spendings. It is also noteworthy that higher education accounted for a lion’s share, while environmental services and other payments made up only a minimal portion.
Focusing first on higher education expense, the figure started at 35% in 1980. Over the next 10 years, the payment staggeringly increased by 10% (the highest proportion in the chart). However, this figure then slightly decreased to 40% by the end of the period. Another rise could be seen in the expenditure on transportation, which accounted for 16% of the government expense in the year 1980. Despite a significant drop to a mere 6% in the next decade, the figure received a three-fold increase in 2000. Additionally, though occupying a small proportion of the annual spending in 1980 with only 4%, the total sum of money spent on environmental services showed a gradual increase throughout the period and finally culminated in 2000 at 9%.
On the other hand, spending on K-12 Education accounted for 25% in 1980, but then saw a slight decline to 20% in 1990 and further to 18% by 2000. Likewise, the budget allocated to Health and Human Resources showed a small overall decrease between 1980 and 2000, despite a brief rise to 20% in 1990. Meanwhile, expenditures on other categories gradually fell from 6% in 1980 to just 1% in 2000.
