The percentages of different transport means used by the British in the years of 1965, 1985, and 2005 were illustrated in three pie charts. Overall, there was a steep growth in the number of private cars, making it more dominant, while other transport vehicles saw a considerable decrease in their usages.
In 1965, private cars were a common transport mode, accounting for 40% of total use. This figure grew significantly to 55% in 1985 and reached its peak point (60%) in 2005. By contrast, there was a gradual fall of 5% (from 25% to 20%) in the use of public transport in 1985, before rising to 22% in 2005.
In 1965 and 1985, the same proportion of lorries and commercial vehicles was used in the UK, accounting for a fifth. However, there was a twofold decline in its use in the final year. Regarding recreational vehichles, the figure fell from 15% to 5%, before going up to 8% in 2005.
