This line chart illustrates the average change in UK consumer spending annually from 2000 to 2020.
Overall, the amount of money spent by the average UK consumer on groceries, books, and newspapers is steadily decreasing, while the consumption of beauty products has significantly increased in the two-decade period.
The average spending on groceries rose slightly above 150 pounds between 2000 and 2010 before it began to fall after 2010 until it hit around 130 pounds. On the other hand, the spending range on books and newspapers was fixed around a little bit less than 100 pounds before 2005 and started to drop continuously afterward until it showed a drastic dip after 2015.
The average Beauty products consumer spends around 75 pounds which was the lowest compared to the other two categories before 2005. And then it took off dramatically over the years until it hit an average of approximately 225 pounds in 2020. And that is a 450% increase which is more than the other two categories combined in terms of average spending.
