The two provided maps illustrate the significant transformation of the Townsville Sports Centre and its surrounding area over a 20-year period, from 1995 to 2015. Overall, the centre underwent a major redevelopment and expansion, involving the relocation of key facilities and the introduction of several new amenities, while some existing features were retained.
In 1995, the sports centre had its main entrance and reception situated on the western side. To the east of the reception was a Restaurant, and further east, a Gym. In the northern section of the complex, a Swimming pool was located, with Changing rooms positioned to its east. Outside the main building, on the far eastern side, there was a large Football pitch.
By 2015, the layout had been substantially reorganised. The reception was relocated to a more central position on the southern side, with the main entrance now leading from this direction. The former ‘Restaurant’ was replaced by a ‘Cafe’, now situated to the northwest of the new reception area. The Changing rooms were expanded and repositioned along the western side of the complex, and new facilities such as Showers and a Sauna were introduced adjacent to the Swimming pool. Most notably, the Football pitch was completely replaced by a large ‘Sports hall’ to the east of the main building. Despite these extensive changes, the Gym and the Swimming pool remained integral parts of the centre, though integrated into the new configuration.
