The table compares six underground metro systems in terms of the number of lines, total track length, annual passenger journeys, and the cost of a single ticket.
Overall, the New York City Subway has both the highest number of lines and the longest total route length among the six systems. By contrast, the Tokyo and Beijing subways record the highest figures for annual journeys, while London has the most expensive fares.
The New York City Subway operates 24 lines, the largest network shown, followed by the Beijing Subway with 19 lines. Similarly, New York has the longest total length at 659 miles, almost double that of Beijing, which extends to 357 miles. Despite this, Beijing accommodates nearly twice as many annual journeys as New York, at 3.6 billion compared with 1.65 billion, while charging a relatively low fare of US$0.45 per ticket.
In contrast, the London Tube has the fewest lines, with only 11, and also records the lowest number of annual journeys at 1.2 billion. Meanwhile, the Paris Metro is the shortest system overall, measuring just 127 miles. Finally, Mexico City offers the cheapest fare among the six cities, at only US$0.23 per journey.
