The bar chart depicts the number of French adults, in thousands, whose parents spoke a regional language to them in childhood, as well as the numbers who currently speak a regional language to their own children.
Overall, the use of regional languages has decreased over time. Occitan and Alsatian were the most common languges in the past. A few adults now use these langug languages with their children. Creole and Corsican were the least common languages in both charts.
In the first chart, about one million adults said their parents spoke Occitan to them occasionally, which was the highest. Around 600 thousand people were spoken to habitually in Alsatian and Occitan Breton was also quite common as an occasional language. About 400 thousand people were spoken in Breton. However, Creole and Corsican had lower numbers. The second chart shows that fewer parents now speak regional languages to their children. Around 500 thousands people were spoken in Alsatian which was the most popular language. Occitan was the second most popular language with about 300 thousands speakers. Breton, Creole and Corsican were in the lower position with below 100 thousand speakers.
