Overall, the number of visitors who came for business, holiday, and meeting purposes increased by the end of the period.

The figure for people coming for business and meeting their friends had the same pattern of an increase throughout. In 1989, figures stood at 5 million visitors and approximately 3.5 million, respectively. While the number of people with meeting purposes had been increasing steadily, the figure for visitors coming with business purposes shrank with thoose of meeting-enjoyers in 1992. Both figures peaked in 2008 and demonstrated a small decrease to 7 and 6 million, respectively at the end of the period.

The figure for holiday enjoyers fluctuated over time. In 1989, it remained the same for two initial years at approximately 6.5 million. This was followed by a steep increase, peaking at 9 million in 1997. This trend was not to last since the figure plummeted to its initial value in 2005 and climbed again in the last year to its peak value.
