The diagram illustrates the world population growth in a span of three centuries and world urban populations in several global regions over a 25 year period. The figures are expressed in billions.
Overall, there is a sharp rise in the global population growth beginning at the mid-20th century and is predicted to dip by the year 2100. A constant increase in the world urban population among developing regions is noted, compared to populations among developed regions which remained and anticipated to be constant over a quarter of the century.
At the beginning of the 19th century, growth of world population was gradual and steady, until a significant increase was observed by the year 1950 that is expected to continue rising by 2050 at 9 billion, an 80% increase from the baseline figure. Numbers are anticipated to decrease by 20% by the end of the 21st century.
World urban population among developing regions started a little over 2 billion on 2005 and appeared to have a steady increase and is estimated to reach a 4 billion mark by 2030, a two-fold increase from the reference point. On the other hand, the number of population among industrialized region began a little over 1 billion on 2005 and appeared to be constant over the years until 2025, and is slated to remain on that level until 2030.
