Dear Alex,
Thank you for reaching out and including me in your project about New Year celebrations around the world. I’m really happy to share how New Year is celebrated in my country, Sri Lanka.
New Year is extremely important to us, not just as a celebration but as a cultural and traditional event. We actually celebrate two New Years—one on January 1st, like most of the world, and the more significant Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April. This April celebration marks the end of the harvest season and is a time for family reunions, traditional games, and rituals.
On New Year’s Day in April, families wake up early, light the hearth at an auspicious time, and prepare milk rice and sweets. We visit relatives, exchange gifts, and take part in customs that promote peace, prosperity, and good luck. People wear new clothes and homes are beautifully decorated. What I love most is the sense of togetherness—it’s a time when even the busiest people make time for loved ones.
Let me know if you need any more details. I’d be happy to help!
Warm wishes,
