Band 8+: "Academic institutions should prioritize moral education as much as they do academic performance." Discuss this view and give your own opinion

espite the significant advancements in academia, reports from the International Journal of Educational Technology Research indicate that student morals have been declining in recent years. In light of this moral downturn, some individuals propose prioritizing moral education on the same level as academic performance. This essay will elaborate on this viewpoint and argue that moral education should primarily be the responsibility of parents, as traditional academic pedagogy is not well suited for imparting moral instruction.

Proponents of the notion that moral education can counteract declining youth morals highlight it as a potential solution to this pressing issue. Today’s young people face a myriad of influences that destabilize their moral values, including sensationalist media, the internet, changing family dynamics, poor role models, and an overemphasis on economic values. Implementing effective moral education programs could involve students debating ethical dilemmas, prompting them to reflect on their choices and engage with their moral compass. As a result, they can develop critical thinking skills, make informed decisions, and cultivate a commitment to their own beliefs.

However, the responsibility for moral guidance should not fall on schools but rather on parents. Parents serve as the primary role models for the new generation and play a crucial role in shaping their children’s behavior and moral outlook. A lack of either a maternal or paternal figure can severely affect a child’s development. For example, according to the World Health Organization, 60% of adolescent offenders and 50% of depressed teenagers in the United States lack adequate parental guidance. While teachers can be exceptional in their educational roles and maintain close relationships with students, they cannot replicate the fundamental influence of a parent. Therefore, the task of guiding the moral development of young people should rest with their parents.

Another argument against integrating moral education into schools is the method of instruction. In academic settings, moral lessons are often taught through papers and tests, such as scenario-based multiple-choice questions, ethical dilemma essays, and roleplay reflections. While these methods can challenge and positively influence students’ ethical perspectives, they have limitations. They may present restricted scenarios, sometimes fail to accurately reflect reality, and impose predetermined expectations for answers. Furthermore, as morality becomes intertwined with testing, moral education risks transforming into a competitive academic subject rather than offering genuine support to help children navigate their lives.

In conclusion, while I acknowledge the potential benefits of moral instruction in addressing the current ethical crisis, I am firmly convinced that such education is best delivered by parents, given the inherent incompatibility with the pedagogy utilized by most schools. schools.
