Scientific advances have enabled artificial intelligence to perform tasks once carried out exclusively by humans. Although this development threatens employment and creates risks associated with technological dependence, I believe its benefits outweigh its drawbacks because it can improve productivity and strengthen healthcare provision.
The principal concern is that automation may displace workers whose jobs involve repetitive tasks. Those with limited qualifications may struggle to find alternative employment, particularly when retraining requires considerable time and money. Moreover, excessive reliance on AI can leave essential services vulnerable to technical failures and inaccurate outputs, potentially causing serious harm when human supervision is inadequate. Nevertheless, neither problem is insurmountable. Accessible retraining programs can help displaced workers acquire relevant skills, while effective oversight can ensure that consequential decisions remain subject to human judgement.
The benefits, however, extend beyond individual businesses. By automating routine administrative duties, AI allows employees to devote more time to tasks requiring creativity, critical judgement and interpersonal skills. This can improve both service quality and operational efficiency without necessarily eliminating the need for human workers. More significantly, AI can contribute to better healthcare by analyzing medical images and identifying abnormalities that might otherwise go unnoticed. Earlier diagnosis enables treatment to begin before diseases progress, potentially improving recovery rates and reducing the need for costly interventions. These gains are particularly valuable because they can improve not only institutional efficiency but also patients’ quality of life.
Ultimately, although AI creates genuine employment and safety concerns, these risks can be mitigated through retraining and responsible human supervision. Its potential to enhance productivity and improve healthcare therefore makes it a net benefit to society.
