Each countries have their own policy about prisoners’ activity while they are in a cell. Therefore, people are debating whether those criminals can access to education and rehabilitation program. In my perspective, I agree that criminals should have granted access to education.
To begin with, we all know that criminals are locked in a prison due to their sentence until the periods end. However, imprisonment goal is not only for punishment, but a reformation when they are released. Education is one of the ways to reform prisoners, through developing new skills and improving self-esteem that have been diminished by their action in the past. Research shows that prisoners who accept education faithfully are rarely repeat any crime actions.
Furthermore, rehabilitation program allows prisoners to restore their psychological condition and mindset from a criminal into an ordinary person. Normally, crime action rises due to disparity in wealth, lack of education, and other social factors. Through a rehabilitation program, they are given an opportunity to access a service that they never get and to remedy their mental health and erase criminal mindset among them. For instance, several prisons allowing worship as part of rehabilitation activities.
Critics may exist because some people think criminals do not deserve those privileges. Nevertheless, this action should be taken for a better impact in a society in the future. Once prisoners are released, they will have a purpose in their lives.
To conclude, education and rehabilitation programs access should be given to criminals for a long-term welfare by acquire new skills and mental health development.
