Traditionally, employees are expected to wear formal attire, such as uniforms and suits to their workplace, in order to look presentable. While there has been some relaxation in dress codes as of recently, some people feel as though this initiative pushes people to be less serious about their occupation’s undertaking. This essay will argue in support of allowing employees to dress more casually at work.
One reason is that casual dressing does not necessarily encourage people to take their jobs less seriously. While looking professional those affect people by helping them feel more professional and respectful, it may also be suffocating. This is especially for those whose jobs are more creativity and self-expression oriented. For example, when an animator is forced to stick to a set of uniform, they may feel unmotivated and uninspired, whereas being allowed to express themselves by wearing clothes more in line with their personal taste may increase their confidence and motivation, therefore productivity. So, a strict rule of dressing will not work for all professions.
Despite the myth, when workers understand are committed to their job descriptions, their working dynamics would not be hindered by what they are wearing. If there are indeed problems with their performance, it can not only be attributed to their clothes, instead, further investigation and intervention may be needed. At the same time, this is also much more convenient and cost efficient as workers do not have to buy new clothing items for work purposes. They may need to have one set of smart casual attire to attend formal or client meetings, but can utilize their daily wear for every other days.
At the end of the day, I am in support of allowing people to dress more casually to work as it has less to do with professionality. However, I believe that there should still be a certain dress codes to follow in certain situations to maintain a certain level of propriety to avoid uncomfortable situations.
