Band 7+: Although countries with long average working hours are economically successful, This often has some negative social consequences. To what extent do you agree or disagree

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The economic success of countries heavily relies on various factors, with the working hours of the labor force playing a significant role in industry growth. Many companies strive to extend working hours in pursuit ofextend working hours in pursuit of greater profitability. However, this pursuit often leads to negative social consequences that are not in line with societal values. From my perspective, I concur with the assertion that there are detrimental effects due to longer working hours, as evidenced in our immediate environment.

The primary objective of most companies is to maximize profits, and some resort to unjust practices such as exploiting their low-income workers. It is well-established that reducing production costs leads to higher profitability, hence the tactic of reducing workers’ wages. In response, governments have intervened by implementing policies to ensure a minimum income for all individuals. However, companies have found ways to offset this additional cost, often through the expedient of increasing working hours. By doing so, they engage the workforce to produce more goods at the same cost, effectively mitigating the impact of increased wages. Consequently, companies lay off a significant number of employees to increase their profits, while the remaining workers are compelled to work longer hours in order to maintain production levels.

These developments also have a profound impact on society by subjecting the less privileged to undue hardship. This perpetuates discrimination within society, creating a scenario in which people are compelled to endure such injustices without recourse. On close examination, it becomes apparent that these societal divisions afflict a broad spectrum of individuals, as those in positions of privilege exploit others to further their own interests.

In conclusion, it is evident that while longer working hours contribute to economic growth, they engender numerous adverse effects within our society. The rights of underprivileged individuals are infringed upon by those in positions of wealth and power
