Nowadays, getting plastic surgery is becoming more popular. More people are opting to get these operations to change something about their appearance. This essay argues that the core of this negative phenomenon is the unrealistic standards set on social media
The different websites and platforms on the internet are causing one of the so-called “modern diseases” of body dysmorphia. When users browse and scroll on applications like Instagram and Facebook, they see pictures and videos of models and influencers with a certain popular physique. Seeing this type of content multiple times leads the subconscious mind into thinking that this is the ideal body shape. Moreover, plastic surgeons grabbed this opportunity and marketed their work by showing before and after photos of how they can help fix certain parts of your body. For example, Instagram revealed that in 2024, three-quarters of the paid advertisements on its platform were about products or services that help in fat loss. Seeing such posts on the daily will make your brain think that having a little bit of fat is unacceptable and something should be done about it.
The increasing number of cosmetic surgeries is a very negative trend. When everyone gets these operations, people will eventually all look similar. Thus, there will be less variability between people and the different beauty standards everyone once knew will be gone. Moreover, plastic surgeries can go wrong. Problems range from minor side effects to life-threatening conditions. Micheal Jackson, for instance, had more than 10 surgeries to have a lighter skin complexity. He achieved his goal but at the cost of his life.
In conclusion, the ridiculous beauty standards established on social media are the reason why more people decide to have cosmetic surgery. This is a dangerous development that puts their lives in jeopardy.
