Paid work has become more affordable for children across the globe. Door of new opportunities, has opened for children over the last half decade. While some consider it as something beneficial for the life experience, others regard it as totally incorrect and irrelevant experience for children. I’d say it’s a great opportunity to explore different fields from an early age, because it allows children to choose their carrer path more precisely, considering their own job experience.
Many countries allow kids, starting from 14 years old, to work on a part-time jobs. This allows them to be financially independent from their families, whoose annual income might be low for a comfortable living. For example, many teenagers in Peru start working early as tourist guides to help their parents with debts and bills. This kind of experiences fosters responsibility in them from their youth. Furthermore, it contributes to the economic development of the Republic of Peru, by increasing the Gross Domestic Product. Moreover, engagement with paid work allows kids to explore various careers, starting from a sales manager at a small local shop to a media influencer internationally. Accordingly, when they go to pursue degree at university, they can choose their major based on their own career perceptions. On top of that, early working experience nurtures curiosity for learning. As children start working, they explore diverse scientific termins, name of processes and situations that enabling them to be curious about them.
On the other hand, on paid work could affect the quality of their education, because if children acknowledge that they earn decent amount of money, they might ignore the importance of knowledge, and focuse solely on their earnings. For example, students at high school who do not study well and get bad grades, sometimes sleep during class. Many people think it’s because of their personality. However, many of them were just working all-night shifts to help with bills for their families. So, they do not have enough energy to learn subjects at school.
To sum up, although paid work can affect the quality of education of kids and is considered as something completely wrong, I believe it gives more benefits, rather than harms. It’s an amazing opportunity to explore yourself in different fields and find your own path.
