In this day and age, older adults still hold some conventional ideologies on the way to live, think and behave. Some think that these ideas are no longer beneficial because of the ever-changing nature of modern society. I disagree with this view, as traditional values still offer numerous advantages that outweigh the drawbacks.
Proponents of this viewpoint may argue that conventional manners have to change in order to adapt to the modern era. For instance, the rigourous hierarchical competition in various enterprises may cause workers to gravitate towards individualism rather than traditional collectivist traditions. In addition, conventional thinking is potentially obsolent due to the increasing complexities of studies, work and social interaction which necessitate critical thinking skills and non-linear thinking. Furthermore, excessive courtesy from the past potentially cause awkwardness in modern conversations as traditional values are neglected. However, this is discounting the fact that the development of modern society necessitate a set of ideologies to underpin young people’s life, thinking and behaviour.
Notwithstanding the aforementioned disadvantages, I contend that conventional ideologies serve as a baseline for the young to navigate the world. For example, ancient ideas on work-life balance and life satisfaction can help prevent stress and mental illnesses that may stem from overwork. Similarly, conventional thinking may be useful in certain cases where the situation is easier to overcome with simple, linear thinking. Furthermore, common politeness like sincere greetings and table manners are indispensable for the youth when communicating with a newly established acquaintance or an older adults in order to construct positive initial impressions.
In conclusion, many people contend that traditional values on the way of life, thinking and behaviour are no longer beneficial to the young in contemporary era. However, I strongly believe that these values serve as a baseline pattern to safely navigate the world.
