A growing number of individuals today purchase and utilize their own cars despite the impacts of climate change. Although both individuals and society benefit from this trend, I think that its environmental damage should be concerned.
Admittedly, the benefits of having your own car are evident. On an individual level, a car has given the owner the freedom of movement. This means they can travel for the ease of transportation, instead of waiting and commuting by public transport like bus or train. Additionally, families could travel together more easily, especially when there are elderly or disabled members who might find public transport uncomfortable to use. On a social level, the trend of purchasing and owning personal vehicles contributes to the economic development of countries. For example, millions of job opportunities are provided to serve automobile travelers, such as working at filling stations or garages, and governments have promoted the automobile manufacturing industry to boost the local economy.
Despite the positives mentioned above, the drawbacks of the trend toward which effects directly on the environment are more significant. Chief of this is that the increase in car ownership leads to the depletion of natural resources such as metals for production and fuels for commuting. As a consequence, the world will gradually run out of essential resources, which are necessary for the production and daily life of citizens in the future. Added to this is the fact that it also causes more serious air pollution as more waste gases from cars will be emitted. Therefore, many people have suffered from various diseases related to the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.
In conclusion, I believe that the disadvantages of the increase in car ownership outweigh the advantages. This is provided that electric cars and alternative fuels could solve such damages. However, this appears to be a future aspiration rather than a likelihood for the near future unless the price of those alternatives is inexpensive.
