It is often argued that the design of a building should focus on its function rather than what it looks like. I only partially agree with this idea because while the purpose is the most important thing, the appearance of a building also matters. In this essay, I will explain my opinion.
On the one hand, architectural design should focus on the purpose of the building. The main reason we construct a building is to use it for a particular function. For example, a hospital is a place for treating sick people. It needs to be practical for doctors and nurses to do their jobs, not just look nice from the outside. If a building is beautiful but not useful, it is a waste of money. In addition, all new buildings need to be safe for the people who use them. Architects must follow safety standards and precautions. If a design is too sophisticated just to be captivating, it might be dangerous in an emergency like a fire.
On the other hand, there is an argument for designing beautiful buildings. I believe that the way a building looks can affect how people feel. If we only build boring, grey blocks, cities will look depressing. However, if buildings are designed with style and creativity, it makes the environment more pleasant for everyone. Furthermore, beautiful buildings can become famous landmarks. For instance, many tourists visit Paris or Rome to see the grippingly iconic architecture, which helps the economy of those cities.
In conclusion, I agree that a building must be practical and safe. However, I disagree that we should ignore beauty completely. The best buildings are those that serve their purpose well but are also nice to look at.
