Band 7+: Celebrities are role models and should behave well in public. Do you agree or disagree ?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is a debate over the role of celebrities in society, with some claiming they must behave well in public, and others disagreeing with this opinion. While it is understandable that everyone has the right to act freely and it is caregivers’ responsibility to raise a child properly, I believe that as celebrities have a huge impact on society, they must take care of their actions in public and become positive figures unlike politicians and business people.

People have equal rights despite their influence over others; therefore celebrities should not have to carry extra responsibility regarding their actions. By law, there is no disparity between a famous and not famous person, so if the former undergoes a huge pressure just because of his fame, such difference in approaches is usually called “an unfair treatment”. We don’t continuously examine common people’s choices, but it changes when it comes to well-known figures. For example, we watch an ordinary person smoking in public space without concern, but when it is a celebrity, things escalate quickly from ignorance to judgment. Additionally, whether a child behaves well or badly hugely relies on his parents as their main role is to supervise the child and teach him how to be a good person. While growing up, children are most likely to copy actions of those around them, and parents are the ones who the kid spends the most time with. On top of that, watching famous people on TV doesn’t influence children as much as seeing their parents managing their life through different choices. Take dysfunctional families for example, where kids are most likely to become aggressive similarly to their parents, despite watching celebrities being generous and successful.

Despite these compelling arguments, I remain convinced that those who have influence must consider their power on masses before acting without a second thought. Everyone knows that being a celebrity means getting constant attention from fans, and people tend to have a desire for exactly the same garments or devices their idols have in order to be like them. Consequently, there will be attempts of copying manners and personal choices of those who are loved by millions. With such behavior being considered, celebrities should avoid a negative image as they may unintentionally affect others on going the same wrong path. Moreover, some influential people outperform politicians and business people with their impact on decisions of millions, so they must compensate the lack of positive role models in society. Governmental bodies and entrepreneurs are often viewed as evil people focused primarily on financial profits leaving no room to making life better, so their counterparts in power of influence must be the ones who people can see trustworthy. This consensus is reached by funding those in need and donating to foreign countries that are at war or other difficulties, so that people will do the same type of generosity after them.

In conclusion, although I concede that boundaries of impactful individuals should be protected by law and it must be parents who are held responsible for the way their children behave, I maintain that in contrast to other types of people at the same position, when it comes to celebrities, the cost of living in the spotlight must be compensated by leaving a positive impact on spectators by leading a well-organized life full of help for others.
