An access to television has affected the way children spend their time, prioritising watching TV over physical activities. In this essay we will discuss what are some adverse effects of extended television watch time and why I believe that kids should be allowed to watch television but in moderation.
The major implication of long duration of exposure to television is potential eye problems. The ultraviolet lights emitting from the screen could adversely affect the vision of young ones. For example – My cousin, at a young age, severely damaged the cornea because of watching television regularly for a long period of time. Furthermore, it impacts the physical health of the children in the long run, since they spend most of their time in front of a screen, hence neglecting physical activities like running, playing sports and spending some time outdoors.
However, considering all the negative effects, I still believe children should be permitted to have some screen time provided with some supervision. Television can promote creativity among the children as it creates visual simulation and cues. The channels on screen could also support them with communication and bonding, as most of the series highlights the importance of friendship and bonds. Hence, explaining complex topics in simple words, which otherwise could be complicated to explain or teach by the parents. For example – The cartoon Noddy helps kids to think out of the box and promotes creative thinking by looking for solutions to the problem.
In conclusion, television may have some negative effects like health and eye related problems, but in moderation it could promote the creative spark and ideas among the children, which could shape their personality positively. Television is one of the greatest innovations, if utilised properly by parents, could shape the mindset of their kids in the right direction.
