There is a topic of ongoing debate whether children should always follow their parents’ advice or not. In my opinion, children should be obedient to their parents when they are young, however, children should make decisions by themselves when they grow older.
On the one hand, young children should follow their parents’ advice. This is because young children are not fully aware of the world. As a result, they may be in danger if there is no guidance from their parents. For example, parents tell young children that boiled water is dangerous so that children can be careful when dealing with hot water and avoiding unexpected accidents. Moreover, children should obediently follow principles that their parents set up such as going to bed early, eating well, or avoiding fast food. For instance, children should go to bed early as their parents ask unless they can feel sleepy on the following day and can not fully grow.
On the other hand, when children grow up, they are capable of making decisions on their own. At this stage, parents can not compel children to follow their requests but just give advice and directions. For example, when students go to university, students should make decisions on major that they would like to study. In this case, parents should only give advice and orientation to their children but not force children to choose the career that parents want.
Allowing children to make decisions by themselves improve childrens’ confidence and independence which significantly contribute to their future success. Conversely, if children have always to follow their parents’ advice, they may become depedent and vulnerable which is harmful for children’s future. Therefore, children may become panic and less confident when there is no support from their parents.
In conclusion, at the early stage of children’s life, children should follow their parents advice to ensure well-rounded growth. However, when children become adolescents, they should be responsible for their own life instead of depending on their parents for direction.
