Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 6+: Despite better access to education, some adults are not able to read or write. What are the main disadvantages of this? What can be done to solve this problem?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

These days, although receiving education is more accessible than ever, some individuals in their adulthood still have not mastered reading or writing skills. As a result, it entails multiple negative consequences associated with unemployment and financial instabilities. However, there are several potential solutions to this problem.

To commence, the drawbacks followed by the lack of these essential skills are rather noticeable. First, reading and writing are now regarded as the top-skills when applying for a new job. The reason is that one’s performance is hugely dependent on a person’s ability to handle the devices such as computers, which are now involved in almost any working process, following the instructions which require thorough prior reading. Moreover, possessing the writing ability is necessary for dealing with paper documents, which is also an integral part of any occupation. Thus, a total absence of the afore-mentioned abilities ushers in being unemployed, making an individual unable to earn a decent living. As a subsequent issue arising, people resort to taking bank loans and credits, which they struggle to pay off afterwards.

On the positive side, certain measures can be taken in order to reduce the number of people confronting this issue. First, certain clubs for people unable to read or write could be introduced, where an upward trend in academic performance within a group would be encouraged by financial rewards, therefore stimulating students to keep following this pattern. Moreover, legalising parents’ responsibility of teaching their children to read or write before children go to school would be another effective initiative. With the introduction of reading and writing tests in the first grade, parents of those children who fail it pass it should be imposed fines on for not ensuring a proper pre-school education for their offspring.

In conclusion, as the disadvantages concerning economic hardships seem to be quite daunting, that supports the need of finding solutions to eliminate the increasing problem of illiteracy in the near future.
