With the growth of science and technology, environmental harm has drawn public attention. Some people believe that living simply will safeguard the environment, while others consider that science and technology can resolve environmental issues. I partially agree with both perspectives, since each development has a bright side and a downside. This essay will examine the reasons behind this issue and present my supporting views.
One of the major reasons for environmental damage is the overuse of natural resources rather than the prevalence of the internet. The depletion of raw materials is attributed to human activities which result in severe crises, including air pollution, water contamination, and an imbalance in biodiversity. For example, the BBC once reported that a river had been contaminated due to overtourism and the toxic substances emitted by nearby households and factories. Therefore, adopting a simpler lifestyle, such as reducing overconsumption and avoiding unnecessary industrial activities, could alleviate these problems.
It is true that advances in science and technology can help tackle the urgent environmental challenges facing our planet. Without technology assistance, problems such as the extinction of species, acid rain and deforestation cannot be solved. For instance, the air quality in New York has improved through renewable energy-powered transportation and the promotion of public transportation instead of private cars. This improvement is largely due to the invention of trams and electric automobiles. Although the main problem stems from human activity, this case demonstrates that technology can address environmental challenges.
In conclusion, natural resources are limited and should be utilized in a more sustainable way. Advances in science and technology can help mitigate environmental crises, but the root cause remains human exploitation. By educating individuals and implementing strict regulations on factories, this issue can be overcome.
