In my opinion, both parties play crucial roles, but the balance of responsibility should shift slightly towards parents. This essay will explore both perspectives before offering a final viewpoint.
On the one hand, many people believe that teachers are in the best position to instill discipline in students. Since educators spend a significant portion of the day with students, they are able to monitor behavior closely and enforce rules consistently. From this perspective, teachers are seen as authority figures who should shape students’ conduct within the school environment. However, I disagree with this view because teachers have numerous other responsibilities, including academic instruction and pastoral care, and adding the sole burden of discipline would be overwhelming. For example, a study in the UK revealed that schools with the highest levels of discipline were those where parental involvement was actively encouraged, showing that teachers alone cannot maintain order effectively.
On the other hand, some believe that discipline should primarily be the responsibility of parents. This view is grounded in the idea that parents are the first role models children encounter, and it is within the home that fundamental values and attitudes towards authority are shaped. I strongly agree with this viewpoint, as parents have the greatest influence over their children’s behavior from a young age.
