Band 8+: Education for young people is important in many countries. However, some people think that the government should spend more money on education for the adult population who cannot read and write. Do you agree or disagree?

Opinions are divided whether education for the children should be the top priority of a country. While some believe so, I am more of the idea that the government should spend more money on the adult population who are unable to read or write.

Initially, allocating in illiterate adults may raise public equality among the society. To explain, people who lack the ability to perform the foundation skills are commonly being underestimated, which results in them having low self-esteem. By providing the opportunity and the environment to acquire those missing skills, those individuals will gain more confidence as well as not feeling left out in today’s society. Moreover, educating adults who cannot read and write can indirectly benefit the children. In other words, illiterate parents often struggle to help their kids with homework, read to them, or emphasize the value of schooling. If they are educated, it will develop a better environment for studying for their children at home. As a result, funding for parents is investing in the children.

Granted one might argue that children represent the future of a nation. This is based on their youth and the ability to contribute to the country’s economy in long terms. However, It takes approximately 10 to 15 years for kids to grow up and finish school. Not to mention the amount of time spent on specific work training sessions before possibly taking part in the workforce. On the other hand ,illiterate adults are part of the current workforce. If a government helps them learn to read and write today, those adults can immediately get better jobs, boost economic productivity, and stop relying on government welfare. Therefore, investing in the disadvantaged adults benefits the country immediately and is more consistent compared to the younger ones.

To conclude, while investing in children is crucial, I firmly believe that governments should prioritize funding education for illiterate adults. Solving their illiteracy not only delivers instant economic perks but also raises public equality among the disadvantaged society while still contributing to the younger generation at the same time, making it an urgent and necessary use of money.
