Band 7+: Education should be accessible to people of all economic backgrounds. All levels of education, from primary school to tertiary education, should be free. To what extent do you agree with this opinion?

Education is one of the most important factors deciding the development of nations. Government, therefore, has raised a lot of funds to improve their educational system and created a favorable condition for every child to attend schools. In some people’s opinion, all educational stages should be free so that they are easily accessible to students from different economic backgrounds. From my perspective, I totally disagree with this idea.

First and foremost, authorities obviously assume the heavy burden when the tuition fees are free. National budget is used to cover a plethora of fees and costs such as civil servant’s salary, facilities in schools and workplaces, or investment in projects and businesses. Paying for all students’ tuition probably restricts the development of countries as less investment in infrastructure and other important fields like tourism or industry. This can lead to the loss of equilibrium between education and other sectors. For example, there are about 22 million students in Vietnam. If the Vietnamese government enacts policies to have tuition-free, they need to cover all the fees for a plethora of students. The government budget, as a result, is likely to be exhausted so there is no concentration on the growth of other categories.

In addition, competitions among schools no longer occur when the tuition fee is zero. Ordinarily, a school with high fees will have better facilities as it has a huge budget. They also have the ability to organize many contests or races for students to show their talents and gain experiences. The awards of those are probably high so that it can boost the incentives and competitions among students. Moreover, tuition fees from students are considered as the greatest contribution to the teaching quality because schools are able to invite prospective teachers, and lecturers. Fulbright is a university that has a high fee for their students to study, but the quality of teachers and facilities always satisfy their learners.

Besides, authorities always create a favorable condition to have children with disadvantaged backgrounds to attend school. There are many programs to subsidize and raise funds for underprivileged students. Scores of scholarships from the government also sponsor students to continue their learning journey.

In conclusion, the assistance is always available to help students attend school without restriction so the government does not need to pay for all the tuition fees as this can result in the imbalance among important factors in a country.
