Band 8+: Environmental protection should be the responsibility of politicians, not individuals as individuals can do too little. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is a view that politicians should be held accountable for environmental protection since individual efforts are not as effective and far-reaching. Although individuals can make some contributions to preserving the environment, I believe politicians are the ones who have the potential to make a real difference with their power by introducing new regulatory laws, as well as allocating resources, which can significantly impact environmental preservation.

Individuals, albeit on a smaller scale, can contribute to preserving the environment with their actions. For example, they can adapt to a more environmentally friendly lifestyle by changing their habits, like conserving energy and supporting sustainable practices. This, in turn, will alleviate some burden on the government. However, these efforts will have minimal impact on the protection of the environment. Thus, the scale of environmental challenges often requires systematic changes, which is where politicians and government officials come into play.

Governments, through their elected politicians, can enact and enforce policies aimed at more effective environmental protection. Politicians can develop legislation to protect natural resources, mitigate pollution, conserve biodiversity, and promote sustainable practices. These laws often establish standards, guidelines, and penalties to deter and discourage harmful activities that negatively affect the environment. With these laws, governments can raise environmental awareness to encourage individuals to prioritize environmental conservation consciously.

Furthermore, politicians have access to government funds and resources with the help of which environmental problems can be combatted. They can allocate finances for research, invest in renewable energy, and establish protected areas like national parks. While giant private entities like Tesla are contributing to reducing the impacts of pollution by manufacturing environmentally clean machines and products, in my opinion, governments have the potential to make a larger and faster impact.

In conclusion, despite the role of individuals in environmental protection, I believe it is the politicians who can make the real difference. They can introduce laws that promote environmental consciousness and channel resources, such as funds, to implement more effective measures to prevent environmental deterioration.
