Band 9: Environmental protection should be the responsibility of politicians, not individuals as individuals can do too little. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some argue that individual endeavors are negligible in solving major environmental problems such as pollution or climate change, and only governments and large enterprises can create a significant impact. Personally, while I acknowledge that the roles of authorities and big companies are undeniable, I also believe that individual efforts, if combined, can make a huge difference.

First of all, individuals are often regarded as the core of society. Therefore, while a person’s effort is seemingly small at first, these small contributions together can ultimately make a huge impact on society as a whole. For instance, regarding families, if parents set good examples in preserving the environment, they can promote a sustainable lifestyle in their children. Moreover, together with families, if students are educated about environmental problems and ways to prevent them in school, such as recycling plastic bottles, over time, this can create a domino effect, potentially spreading the green mindset to the whole school, resulting in an environmentally friendly community.

At the same time, administrative authorities can enact stringent legislation on environmental protection, or implement financial incentives for eco-friendly businesses. For example, governments can impose heavier taxes on factories powered by fossil fuels, forcing them to seek sustainable energy sources. At a corporate level, rules such as making staff bring their own water bottles instead of using plastic ones can help boost employees’ environmental awareness. In addition, major manufacturing enterprises can focus on investing in eco-friendly production lines, researching methods to reduce industrial waste, or switching to biodegradable packaging. These alterations from organizations with pervasive influence can greatly mitigate the damage to the environment.

In conclusion, while the impact of major organizations is irrefutable due to their ability to drive universal changes through stringent legislation, individual efforts are by no means trifling. Through collective action, everyday citizens can lay a foundation for an eco-conscious community on a societal scale.
