A group of people believe that this is not a crucial problem due to the fact that if there are fewer languages, communication will be easier. This essay argues with that statement because the diversity of the world’s languages has a lot of benefits for individuals and societies as well.
It is argued that of the thousand languages that exist today, a certain amount of them become extinct every year. The main reason for the disappearance is due to globalization and the educational process, which affects communication in international languages such as English, French, and German. The interaction of populations from all parts of the planet goes through commonly used languages, which leads to less use of their native languages and the commencement of the extinction of some languages. For instance, many young people from developing countries take exams in foreign languages such as English in order to study abroad at prestigious universities to improve their educational skills. In many cases, they remain in another country; furthermore, over time, they will stop using their own languages.
On the other hand, the most commonly used languages bear witness to the uniqueness of cultures. It is necessary to maintain the diversity of world languages since each of them represents the identity of a nation and community. Even though some languages might only be spoken by several people, they have an important function in passing on the heritage of ancestors to future generations. For example, traditional myths that are written by hand or oral fairy tales, if they die out, then the culture would also be lost.
