Rating is a mandatory part of school and work, however a lot of people dislike being rated. There is many reasons why people don’t like being evaluated. From my perspective, the main reason is self-esteem, many people are becoming insecure and depressed because of their school or university marks. Therefore this problem can be solved.
Evaluation makes people feel insecure, in the primary school students are competing with their classmates because of grades, and if someone has a lower grade than average, he automatically starts to feel bad, because it feels like everyone is better than you. And it’s getting worse, before it was just your classmates, then your dream university which accepts only if your GPA is 90+ percent. Moreover, your dream work may have some requirments about your degree, and you can’t get to work without this degree. All this leads to problems with self-esteem and depression.
However, I’m convinced that this problem can be solved by a few changes in education process. Firstly we have to teach children that marks are not that important as they think. They have to understand that mark is their feedback, where they can discover your mistakes and learn how to correct these errors. Also teachers have to learn how to give a proper feedback, it shouldn’t be just a mark without any explanation. Teacher has to explain any errors to student and also explain how to spot this mistakes and how to correct them. If we do all this steps, next generation won’t take marks that seriously; hence, won’t feel insecure if they got a bad mark.
In conclusion, make people feel comfortable about marking themselves is a complicated process. We got to start teach our children absolutely different things compared to things that our parents taught us. However, if we do it, we will rise much less depressed generation than our.
