While some people argue that the majority of a full-time students’ time should be spent studying, others think that they should do other activities alongside studying. Although studying should be the first priority, it is still crucial to keep doing other things so as not to get the opposite result.
The opinion that students need to allocate most of their time to studying their field is valid, but I believe that the reality is not as simple. I think that their education should be their priority since it, more often than not, has a significant impact on their lives. For example, many hard majors, such as computer science, physics, and mathematics require hundreds of hours of active studying to build an understanding of complex subjects, including operating systems, thermodynamics and many more. That said, students should not fixate only on their coursework since doing something for a long period of time without proper recovery leads to a lack of motivation and burnout.
Having other activies besides university work is a perfect way to recover from heavy and monotone coursework. These activities are things that have meaningful impact, not something like social media posts that disappear the moment you scroll, though they can also be a way to recover if done in moderation. An activity can be any type of hobby that builds a skill, ranging from musical instruments to pottery. Without them, life may start to feel like a coninuous work that has no end.
In conclusion, although students who pursue education full-time should prioritize education, recovering through other activities is a crucial step to not burnout and lose interest in a field.
