Band 8+: Full-time students spend a lot of time studying, but some people say that they should be involved in other activities too. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In contemporary society, university students seem to dedicate the majority of their time to academic pursuits, striving for exceptional academic results. However, there is a belief that involvement in some extracurricular activities can be equally crucial for fostering their personal growth. Personally, I totally agree that while academic engagement should be a primary focus, participation in extracurricular activities is fundamentally indispensable, owing to its multitude of benefits in enhancing students’ overall well-being along with promoting learning productivity.

On the one hand, advocates of the notion that university students should predominantly concentrate on their studies are primarily attributed to advantages of obtaining an academically excellent diploma. Indeed, possessing an outstanding graduation certificate is instrumental in shaping students’ future career trajectories, opening doors to prestigious organizations, highly competitive job markets, and lucrative salaries. For example, in England, honors degrees, which are widely regarded as the gold standard of graduation qualifications, are commonly prerequisites demanded by esteemed recruiters from renowned companies and fundamental requirements for pursuing further education such as masters and doctorate programs. As a result, university students who excel academically are more likely to thrive and attain promising success in the future.

On the other hand, despite those rationales, it is irrefutable that participation in other activities can be beneficial to students’ personal development. Specifically, prolonged periods of sedentary study can potentially result in a range of health issues, particularly relating to the musculoskeletal system and attenuating muscle function, thereby resulting in severe physical health complications. Hence, engagement in some extracurricular activities can contribute substantially to muscle relaxation along with strengthening students’ skeletal health. Furthermore, incessant learning can induce stress and anxiety due to the mental strain associated with absorbing vast amounts of information. This, in turn, can result in diminished focus and deteriorating students’ productivity. Thus, it is profoundly advantageous if university students can allocate their time for diverse activities in order to maintain their mental health and better their academic performance.

In conclusion, it is discernible that prioritizing studying can be conducive to university students’ prospects. Nevertheless, it is indisputable that taking part in some extracurricular activities plays a vitally important role in improving students’ overall well-being as well as boosting their learning efficiency.
