What is globalization? The correct definition for it is “the development of closer economic, cultural, and political relations among all the countries of the world as a result of travel and communication becoming easy.” However, its meaning actually depends on each person’s view. Some may see it as an opportunity, while others may consider it as disasters that ruin the world we are living in right now. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of globalization.
On the one hand, many countries and industries have been positively affected by globalization. Firstly, one obvious benefit is increased economic growth. As countries begin to become more interconnected, many international trades are carried out. This led to increased productivity and growth, especially for the underdeveloped and developing countries, when they are finally catching up with industrialized nations. Secondly, globalization has created many job opportunities, particularly in developing societies. With companies and businesses expanding their operations cross-border, many jobs have been created, providing work for people. Because of this, poverty is reduced and many more citizens are experiencing a higher standard of life around the world. In addition, not only are economic goals achieved during globalization, but political benefits are also seen. In deals and investments between countries, cooperation is essential. As more and more of these negotiations happen, nations tend to have the incentive to work together to find mutually beneficial solutions to problems. As a result of increased economic and cultural exchanges promoted by globalization, there has been greater political stability and understanding between the societies.
On the other hand, globalization has also had its share of challenges. It has been known to be stuck in something called a “negative domino effect”. What it means is that since countries have been relying on each other to develop economically, when the trading partners face an economic downturn in their country, businesses in other countries will be affected. For example, when a powerful nation like the USA experiences a recession, some other countries will immediately lose an important source of income coming from the USA. Another example is the war between Ukraine and Russia. It has been causing a ruckus in the financial world, which affects quite a lot of European countries because Russia has always been the number one oil supplier for many nations. Income inequality can also be fueled by globalization. While some people have indeed experienced prosperity and wealth resulting from globalisation, others are left behind. It has created a concentration of money and power in the bigger industries, which causes the smaller corporations to struggle to survive. This results in the loss of jobs and the widening of the gap between the rich and the poor. Last but not least, globalization contributes to cultural homogenization. As we come in closer contact with people from other cultures, there have been various cultural exchanges, which should be good. Nevertheless, there have been some critics that this led to the disappearance of local culture and the rise of cultures from influential countries, like the United States.
In conclusion, globalization has brought about many positive effects such as economic growth, job creation, and political benefits. However, some troubling problems exist like income inequality or cultural homogenization. To continue developing in the future, we must carefully take into account both the advantages and disadvantages to move forward.
