It is an undeniable fact that there is a stark disparity in the opinion regarding spending of government funds on the promotion of an art or a public welfare. While, some individuals argue that the authorities should reserve significant funds for the preservation and promotion of art, as it reflects our cultural values and traditions, others contend that it is needed to spend money on public services as it can effectively improve the access to essential services and overall well being of individuals and ultimately foster a healthy society. I wholeheartedly agree with the latter assertion, believing that funds for public service can transform not only single generation but future generations too.
It is scientifically proved fact that, different forms of arts are beneficial for mental well-being. While, art is a showcase of rich cultural values and old traditions, it can attract foreign tourist and hence, able to generate foreign revenue and boost economy of a country. Therefore, for the promotion of art, the government should play its part by financing artist and provided them space for talent display, free of cost. In many countries worldwide, it is witnessed that there are separate ministries for art and craft industry and huge share of annual budget is reserved for art industry. But the generation of foreign revenue cannot substitute the promotion of public health.
The proponents of government spending on social service argue that, to promote a healthy and content society, the governments should spend lion’s share of budget for public services. Like the provision of public transport and placing trash bins at public places like parks and hospitals. Although the public has awareness about health and hygiene but due to the unavailability of funds these basic facilities cannot be approached, resulting in unhygienic conditions and ultimately ill maintained society.
In conclusion, the importance of art in terms of bringing peace and generating foreign revenue cannot be overlooked but the money spent on public welfare can transform lives of many families, it will not improve their financial status but also their standard of living, hence it has potential to yield an ideal society.
