It is often argued that a country should prioritise solving land-based problems, such as climate change and poverty, before investing in space exploration. I believe, however, that a balanced approach funding urgent domestic needs while supporting targeted space research is the most sensible path. This essay explains why both goals can and should be pursued concurrently.
Supporters of space programmes point to the considerable technological and economic benefits they bring. Government investment in space often drives innovation in materials, communications and remote sensing, technologies that can be commercialised and exported. In addition, national achievements in space raise a country’s scientific standing and can attract investment, skilled labour and international partnerships. For example, satellite systems originally developed for space missions now underpin weather forecasting and agricultural planning, directly aiding climate resilience.
Nevertheless, critics argue that when millions lack basic services, governments must address poverty, health and environmental degradation first. These are immediate human needs: improving sanitation, healthcare and education saves lives now and builds social stability. Moreover, corruption and weak governance can prevent benefits from reaching the most vulnerable, so public funds should be allocated to strengthen institutions and social programmes.
In my view, the choice is not binary. Governments should secure essential social services and combat corruption as a priority, while allocating a modest, transparent share of the budget to space projects with clear terrestrial benefits. Such a dual policy allows countries to meet urgent human needs today and to invest in long-term technologies that will help solve future problems.
