World widely, homelessness is prevalent among several main cities. Expensive life and mental illness presence can be the strongest causes behind this trend. However, national and international collaboration and providing interdisciplinary intervention for the individuals with mental disorders would eliminate the prevalence.
Economic factors play a critical role in the affordability of basic services such as housing. Moreover, limited job opportunities and stagnant wages contributed to this surge. According to a study, which conducted in 2023 at the University of Jordan, the researchers emphasized that costly life has significantly increased the homelessness phenomenon. In addition, poor supportive systems and absence of caregivers forced the patients with various psychosocial impairments, such as individuals with schizophrenia, to leave their homes and stay on the streets. This can be manifested by having intellectual disabilities and cognitive deficits; thus, they cannot be totally independent in their life.
On the other hand, national sectors such as governmental, private, and NGOs are supposed to ensure the establishment of low-cost housing compounds, which would be equipped with the essential facilities and supplies. For illustration, in Egypt, they tend to create modern housing subsides to provide adequate housing for homeless people. By the end of 2023, they have been establishing more than 15 suburbs. Furthermore, founding strong mental care system should be one of the government’s plans priorities with taking into their consideration the importance of multi-professional intervention, not only the medical treatment, but also the rehabilitation ones, especially the vocational rehabilitation to empower the people with mental illness to work and gain money independently.
In conclusion, the proliferation of being homeless has been obviously observable recently in cities. The significant escalation in prices of the primary things and having confirmed mental health problems are strongly related to homelessness. However, by implementing comprehensive strategies that prioritize affordable housing and providing support services can effectively combat this conflict.
