With more and more advancements made in technological fields, especially in media and internet related aspects, we consumers gain an increasing amount of freedom in what we choose to perceive. Whether its on free to use apps, like Instagram or Tiktok, or even subscription-based aps, we are increasingly exposed to information of every kind, it could be beneficial to our daily lives or profoundly dangerous and disturbing contents. This is the base of my essay in what role the more accessible media plays in the increasing number of violent crimes.
On one hand, the freedom in using the media does contribute to the increment of crime. THis is due to the fact that the media exposes us to more and more graphic images. THis is especially dangerous towards children or young adults whose sense of right and wrong hasn’t really matured. Exposure in form of movies, videos or even games which depicts crime as a normal and acceptable concept in daily live can significantly affect the idea of what is just and what isn’t. For context, in today’s action movies productions, we are shown the imge where causing havoc or taking lives bear no consequences. This help shape the idea that what we do or say brings no penalty which leads to a false sense of normalcy.
On the other hand, what we choose to receive or exposed to, whether is for ourselves or our significant others, play an even bigger role. We are responsible for what we view on the internet. Furthermore, modern parents, with their busy and unseable work-life balance, often choose to leavee their children unsupervised with gadgets and uncontrolled mediaaaa The parents are found to be completely oblivious to what their children view on their gadgets. THis leads to what I explained in the previous paragraph.
WHile the media brings a huge effect on the problem, we cannot overlook our own actions and choices. Whether it’s our younger family members or our friends, we should help advise or control their access to the media. Avoiding this problem require more than a personal effort.
