Family-run business are common in the majority of countries. Some individuals believe this is the optimal method to run a business, while others believe this way to be flawed, and may give rise to issues. In my opinion, while there may be some instances in which these businesses are beneficial, the majority of the time, these businesses are very risky.
On the one hand, family members often get roped into running the business alongside their siblings and/or parents. They might not be willing to, giving them no reason to pour their heart and soul into the work they do; this may cause a decrease in the quality of their work. Not only would this lower their reputation, but could also result in arguments within the family. Although disagreements are prevalent in all business, they could be especially detrimental in family-run business, as this may also permanently affect the relationships of family members. For these reasons, I believe operating a business as a family could give rise to irreversible issues.
On the other hand, trust is likely to be present as all employees are family. Many business face issues with theft and finances, which has a low probability in family-run businesses. Furthermore, work schedules may be more flexible as family may be more lenient and empathetic towards each other. However, this does not completely abolish the idea of untrustworthy or strict family members. Hence, running a business alongside family may not be the most risk-free operation.
In a nutshell, I consider businesses owned and ran by families to be detrimental. Although there may be some perks, in the end, the cons outweigh the pros.
