Nowadays, almost in every nation, students struggle with concentration problems especially in classes. This essay will discuss main causes of it, namely addiction to cell phones and lack of constant social interaction, while government regulation and parents as solutions.
The main reason for students to lack concentration at school is them being highly attached to their phones and be less socially active. They cannot focus on their studies just because, the only thing they think of is their mobile phones and social media. Students have life going on there, so them being away from there even only for a couple of hours feels like a torture and they cannot simply dive into their every day school routine. Furthermore, scrolling through social apps and watching short videos there requires less of a time and effort than listening to a teacher and try to be socially active in your school environment. As a result, students become more and more isolated from real-life conversations so they become shy to participate in class and become addicted to their phones and a need for constant looking to their phones never lives them, which in turn results in concentration issues and worsened grades performance. For instance, according to statistic made in Oxford University, students with higher screen time showed worse results on finals than others who have less.
The primary solution for concentration issue is government intervention. Governments should increase the number of educational programmes that will increase students to be more active in their daily school life. In other words, governments have to engage students to get away their phones and show that life in schools are interesting as in social media. For example they can provide better educational opportunities for students to maybe study abroad because it will boost their motivation to study harder such as Erasmus, but without financial contribution so everybody could participate. In addition, parents can also play a huge role in students’ participation in class. They can reduce screen time of their children so they will not waste all of their time there and push them toward real-life interaction by having conversations on table while eating and try to engage them in outdoor activities with other people so they will be more socially active and show this performance at school. For instance, in Singapore, in order to attract students’ attention in class, government made policies regarding making lessons more in an interactive way, to boost students concentration.
In conclusion, day by day students’ concentration in their studies decrease. So government can play a major role and invent policies that will make the situation better and parents engagement in lives of their children can also help.
