In this modern world, food consumption has skyrocketed in many countries. This trend is influenced by factors such as economic growth, technological advancements, and lifestyle changes. However, excessive food consumption has various negative effects on both individuals and society, including health problems, environmental issues, and food wastage. We will discuss with this in the upcoming paragraphs.
On the one hand major reason for rising food consumption is economic development. As people’s incomes increase, they can afford more food, including fast food and processed products. Moreover the aggressive marketing strategies of food companies, advertisements, discounts, and promotions encourage people to buy and consume more than they need. Moreover, technological advancements in food production have increased the availability of food, making it easier for consumers to access a variety of products throughout the year.
One of the most serious consequences of overconsumption is the rise in health-related issues such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Many people consume high-fat, high-sugar foods, leading to poor health and increased medical expenses. This not only affects individuals but also puts pressure on healthcare systems. Furthermore, excessive food consumption leads a ticking time bomb. The demand for more food results in deforestation, excessive water use, and higher carbon emissions from food production and transportation. In addition, food waste has become a global issue, as large quantities of uneaten food are discarded daily while some people still suffer from hunger.
In my point of view, the increase in food consumption is driven by economic growth, urbanization, and marketing tactics. However, this trend is a double edged sword, including health problems, environmental degradation, and food wastage.
