Some argue that institutions of higher learning must focus on educating students in a particular field because it will be easier for getting jobs in future. While, others believe wider academic knowledge will make students more intelligent and knowledgeable.

On the one hand, providing skill related education can be beneficial to the students for honing their capabilities in a specific field. This will increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the students when they enter the job market. For instance, a professional who have learned the skills required for a certain field even before entering the job market will increase the overall productivity of the company. Furthermore, company do not need to invest in providing the training for the new recruits.

On the other hand, providing academic education on broader topics might increase the overall knowledge and intelligence of the students. This will help students to analyze certain topics from multiple perspectives and understand its true significance because they will not be one dimensional. Knowledge on multiple disciplines will make students acceptable and respectful towards other peoples’ views, which will reduce the internal conflict among employees and make them a valuable asset for employers. Additionally, students will have knowledge of multiple fields, which will make them feel good about themselves and increase their self esteem and confidence.

Overall, universities must focus on producing good human beings equipped with both skill based and knowledge based education. Skill based knowledge will be important in sharpening their job skills while academic knowledge will help in broadening their knowledge horizon.
