Band 8+: In many countries today, people are living in a 'throwaway society', where things are used in a short time and then thrown away. What are its causes? What are its problems?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

One increasing trend in modern society is that people quickly dispose of products after purchasing them. This phenomenon occurs for several reasons, the foremost being the mass production of goods and the emergence of social media. The main detrimental effects of this trend are environmental pollution and a rise in consumerism.

With advancements in manufacturing technology, production costs have significantly decreased, resulting in lower prices for products. As a consequence, people tend to undervalue the items they buy. Furthermore, social media encourages individuals to follow the latest trends. Content creators on these platforms constantly advertise and promote new products to their audiences. This fear of missing out leads to a persistent mindset of replacing old items with new ones whenever people browse social media.

One serious consequence of this ‘throw-away society’ is environmental pollution. On one hand, to meet the growing demand for purchases, factories consume more energy, which in turn releases greater quantities of industrial wastewater and gases into the environment. On the other hand, not all discarded products can be recycled. Many non-biodegradable items end up buried in landfills, which negatively impacts soil quality.

In addition to contributing to environmental pollution, the ‘throw-away society’ has adverse effects on people’s consumption habits, particularly among young individuals. To keep up with trends, they often spend more on fashionable items, sometimes resorting to credit cards to finance luxury clothing, shoes, and jewelry. This unhealthy lifestyle leads to increased living expenses.

In conclusion, mass production and social media are the two primary causes of the ‘throw-away society,’ which negatively affect both our living environment and our lifestyles.
