In different developed countries around the world, governments have introduced a new law concerning retirement, declaring that the retirement age has been raised. Some people claim that this has positive impacts on older individuals; nevertheless, opponents strongly emphasize that it has disadvantages for the future of the youth. In my opinion, raising the retirement age has its advantages and disadvantages; however, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.
First of all, recent studies have concluded that keeping people at work in older age may benefit younger generations by allowing them to gain knowledge and experience. Believing in the benefits of working at an older age, some argue that the older generation is wiser and more knowledgeable. They have accumulated extensive expertise in their fields and, over time, have developed new ways to approach work that can facilitate the tasks of younger workers. In addition, some families believe that keeping older people at work helps them generate income to manage their expenses. Particularly, they assert that, over time, the cost of medicine and groceries has become more expensive, especially for retired grandparents, whose responsibilities often fall on their family members as an additional burden. Moreover, doctors strongly emphasize the importance of keeping older individuals active and engaged in work, as it can be physically and mentally beneficial for them. For example, working at an older age provides opportunities to socialize and communicate with others, which can stimulate their brain cells more effectively than staying home alone and inactive.
On the other hand, opponents disagree with keeping older people at work beyond the retirement age. First, it can be harmful to them, as they may forget what they are doing, or it may be dangerous for them to remain in unsafe job environments. For example, placing an elderly person in a construction site or a factory with heavy machinery could result in injuries due to their slower movements and weaker memory. Second, at an advanced age, doctors recommend staying safe and comfortable at home, relaxing, eating healthy food, and moving according to the needs of their bodies.
Overall, keeping older people at work beyond the retirement age has more disadvantages than advantages. While they may pass on knowledge to the younger generation, they are at higher risk of injuries and reduced attention and energy over time. Therefore, it is not highly recommended to keep them in the workplace.
